Located conveniently at 7535 Garners Ferry Rd in a modest shopping plaza near Planet Fitness, this mom-and-pop eatery delivers a genuine taste of Carolina barbecue that has won over both locals and visitors alike.

Stepping into Big T's, you're immediately greeted by the rich, mustard-forward aroma of classic Carolina BBQ — a scent that promises a flavorful experience. The menu boasts a variety of hearty selections, each crafted to showcase traditional Southern barbecue and comfort food staples. The standout dish, the BBQ and Hash Plate, is a customer favorite, celebrated for its perfectly seasoned chopped BBQ paired with a soulful hash and rice base. Many guests, like Jason G Christensen, have praised this dish as an ideal introduction to the region’s barbecue heritage.

Beyond the signature plates, Big T’s offers a satisfying range of options. The Big T’s Dinners are generous and flavorful: the BBQ Over Rice with Rib features tender rib meat layered over fluffy rice and paired with two savory vegetable sides—a true Southern feast. For those who prefer handheld delights, the Double Cheeseburger and BBQ Sandwich with Slaw provide a deliciously messy, yet comforting meal. Seafood lovers can indulge in the Whiting Fish & Shrimp Combo or the crispy Shrimp Basket, perfect for a lighter but no less satisfying bite.

The dining atmosphere at Big T's is delightfully down-to-earth, where the friendly and patient staff make you feel at home, no matter your level of familiarity with barbecue. Brandon Carter appreciated the relaxed service, noting that there was no rush to decide, allowing diners to savor their experience. This welcoming vibe complements the hearty, home-style food perfectly.

What really shines here is the soulfulness of each dish. Whether it’s the tender smothered chicken with creamy mac and cheese and seasoned collards, as Shariyka Romero experienced, or the crispy fried chicken paired with banana pudding for dessert, as described by Sam Hunte, Big T’s meals comfort and satisfy in every bite. Brian Kelly’s enthusiasm for the rib plate with hash, rice, and sides like corn and collards highlights the meal’s balance of robust flavors and classic Southern ingredients, enhanced with a subtly tangy mustard BBQ sauce that enhances without overpowering.

Big T’s Bar-B-Que doesn’t just serve food; it offers a genuine taste of South Carolina’s culinary heritage wrapped in hospitality and a cozy environment. For anyone looking to soak up authentic Carolina barbecue along with traditional Southern sides, Big T’s is a standout choice that invites you back for more.

The front desk staff at the hotel I was at recommended this place as good local eating. Located in a shopping plaza near a planet fitness. Very mom & pop restaurant. The staff was very nice and patient with me being undecided and I didn’t feel rushed. I got a simple pork rib dinner with mac & Greens as my side. It was bad but I wasn’t blown away. Alot of the customers was getting the hash and rice dish which might be a signature and I wish I had also tried that but I didn’t want to hold the line up with too many questions. But I will say I would come back to try other things if I’m in town again.

Don’t let the strip-mall location fool you — Big T’s BBQ is the real deal. We were in town for a Fort Jackson graduation and wanted real local food. The moment we walked in, that mustard-forward Carolina barbecue aroma hit us, and we knew we were in the right place. I asked what they recommended, and they pointed me toward the hash and rice dinner. This was my first real Carolina barbecue, so I didn’t know what to expect — but it was excellent. The hash was rich and comforting, the barbecue was tender and full of flavor, the mustard greens and cabbage tasted like genuine Southern home cooking, and the cornbread was amazing. Portions were generous, too — you definitely won’t leave hungry. And the sweet tea deserves its own line. This wasn’t weak or watered down — it was strong brewed tea, sweet enough to glaze a donut. Exactly how sweet tea ought to be. If you’re in Columbia or near Fort Jackson for a graduation and want honest, no-nonsense Southern food that locals actually eat, Big T’s is absolutely worth the stop.

I recently visited Big T's Bar-B-Que in Columbia, SC, and ordered the smothered chicken with rice, mac and cheese, collards, cornbread, and a drink. The meal was hearty and flavorful, with the smothered chicken being tender and well-seasoned, paired perfectly with the rice. The mac and cheese was creamy, and the collards had just the right amount of seasoning. The cornbread was warm and soft, rounding out a delicious Southern comfort meal. With generous portions and great taste, Big T's offers a satisfying and authentic dining experience.

Variety of entrees available. I tried the fried chicken and french fries and it was pretty tasty. I also got some banana pudding for dessert and was not disappointed. It was also good.

I ate the rib plate with hash and rice and two sides. My sides were corn and collard greens. The food was delicious. They serve a mustard sauce that is not too mustardy. I highly recommend eating here.
